You can have more but you must reach beyond success

There is a turning point that many of us reach where we begin to ask different questions about our future. What used to motivate us is no longer enough as we start to realize there is a greater calling beyond financial or professional success. A yearning to create a legacy built around significance that illustrates our life counted for something bigger than ourselves.

Don’t panic! You’re not alone and it’s not a mid-life crisis. In fact it’s an entirely healthy phenomenon that happens as we grow and develop as adults and begin to look for ways to give back. According to the psychologist Erikson, this is called generativity and it occurs as we come to realize we are defined by what survives us. As humans, we not only have the passion and motivation to succeed and make something of ourselves, we also have the need to share it with others and ensure our hard work and wisdom benefits the next generation.

Think of it as our quest to connect to our ‘social why?’ To understand our purpose and realize our potential in a social context where we can clearly see and express the difference we make. This is no small thing; it is the splendid torch that moves our lives from the ordinary to the extraordinary. To feel that alive and connected to something that moves us profoundly…money is important but this is gold.

“I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief candle to me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the minute, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations .”
~ George Bernard Shaw

Why Significance Matters

Currency for the soul

Money will only get you so far. Then you have to think about how to use it differently, in ways that feed your soul.

The gift that keeps on giving

Making a positive difference in the life of another person has an exponential effect because they in turn will have an impact on others.

Legacy outlives bank balances

The difference you made will always survive you and nothing can ever take that away from you. Not even the tax man.

Access unbridled energy

What can be more energizing and rewarding than laying your head on your pillow each night confident you lived a valuable and fulfilling day?
